Choosing your planner is just the beginning! But making sure you have all the right accessories, that’s the fun part. Of course you need things like pens and other items to keep you on your planning discovery, so here’s a list of a few things I like to have on hand when planning!
YOUR PLANNER MUST-HAVE’S:
Pens – Of course your #1 ‘must-have’ is the proper writing utensils. I use a variety of pens in my planners but I tend to stick with using only gel pens. I’ve always loved how they write in comparison to your regular roller balls and such. I don’t consider myself a ‘pen connoisseur (lol), but I have had an affinity for good ole pens & paper since I can remember! Anyway, here are a few of my favorites:
Pilot Frixion Gel Eraseable Ink Pens – These have got to be my all time FAVORITE pens to use! It’s the best of both worlds! The pens come in assorted colors and write so smooth. The best part is that they are eraseable! It really can’t get any better than that!
Glitter/Metallic Gel Ink Pens – I’ve found that I lean toward using my glitter gel ink pens just about every week in my planner. They come in packages of different quantities with just about every color you can imagine! I just LOVE them. There are so many different brands out there for really cheap prices. I ordered mine from Walmart, but you can find them just about anywhere!
Sharpie Markers (Medium & Fine Point) – You’re definitely gonna want to have a few sharpies on hand. As you know, they come in assorted colors and point thickness. I tend to lean toward using my fine print markers more often that the mediums though. They only warning I must give you is that they will bleed through your pages so I recommend using your sharpies only to write on thelabels/stickers/washi tape you’re using in your planner.
There are a number of pens available for use, but it all depends on your preference, what you like, and how you’ll use them. Play around with some different types of pens to see what works best for you!
Sticky Notes, Page Tabs – Sticky notes are a great way to keep to-do lists, possible appointments/meetings, and random thoughts/numbers/notes in your planner without having to permanently keep them in your planner. Nothing irks me more than planning an appointment or something, and then less than a day later having to scribble it out because it changed. Now my whole week is ruined….well that’s dramatic (lol). Now looking at my whole week in my planner is ruined. This is where post-it notes come in handy. Page flags sort of serve a similar purpose, but they don’t take up as much space and an whole sticky note. I usually use them to mark small reminders, bills I need to pay, or to really bring attention to an important item.
You can get a variety of sticky notes and page tabs in all sizes, colors and designs now a days. Use your imagination with this one and look for what will work for you, your budget, and your style.
Page Markers, Bookmarks, Paperclips (anything to mark your pages or your place) – Another great accessory for your planner is some sort of clip. I like to use mine to keep the current monthly spread and current weekly spread clipped together. Or sometimes I just use it on the current week to make it easy to flip to. I like binder clips though when I want to clip sections together.
You of course can use whatever type of clip your heart desires. Whether that is a simple paper clip, a colorful binder clip, or a craft designed page marker/paper clip. You can create your own as well as find awesome and fun designs through out the web and in stores. I love to make my own paperclips, page markers, and paper clips.
Washi Tape – Ok, I’m just going to confess now: I AM ADDICTED TO WASHI TAPE! So there you have it! lol I have a pretty large selection to choose from (ok it’s huge). Washi has been my favorite go-to for pretty planning and it’s versatile in many ways. You can find it in all sizes, widths, and even now shapes! It comes in all different colors and sizes. I like the super thin washi to mark off sections in my planner and I like the regular size washi to mark important events, etc. Or sometimes I just put it in my planner for fun! Don’t ask why I love it so much, but from the first time I learned about washi it was a wrap!
Washi tape is probably the most functional stuff on the planet. I’ve used it to decorate in my house, to craft with, and of course in my planner. I’m telling you, this Japanese paper tape is magical. You can remove it and re-stick it multiple times without tearing up your pages. Anyways, if you’re looking for washi tape, you can find it just about anywhere that sells craft supplies.
Stickers – Well you can find stickers just about everywhere, and for everything. Whether you want to mark your paydays, bills, birthdays, TV shows, and/or keep track of how much water you’re drinking, there is a sticker for that. I’ve become a big fan of using stickers to decorate my planner. But I must say, when it comes to decorating your planner with stickers, I am an even bigger fan of using stickers that help make my planner more functional and streamline a lot of things I write. So,. find a sticker sheet or two, or three, that makes you smile and use it to decorate your planner till your heart’s content. You can find “planner stickers” and washi on sites like Etsy, Amazon, and Ebay we well. I make and print a lot of my own planner stickers, but some of my favorite Etsy shops for stickers are:
Scissors, Xacto knife, and/or small paper cutter – The need for scissors is pretty self explanatory. But having a small paper cutter (nothing big & expensive) I’ve found is quicker and easier! And, about that Xacto knife; if you’re a washi tape-aholic like me, this lil tool will be a must-have! One of my many quirky OCD’s is having straight lines in my planner when I’m using washi take and stickers. I use the Xacto knife to just clean up the edges, simple as that!
Tape Adhesive and/or glue sticks – You can find these at any store in the office supplies/craft sections. I tend to use both glue sticks and adhesive adhesive in my planner. The adhesive tape,in particular, is an easy to roll out adhesive that allows you to bond or attach things inside your planner. I love using these for everything I would tape down – they are permanent and secure.
There are a few extra goodies you can have on hand – but like everything I discussed here, they are certainly not required or needed. Here are a few and what I use them for:
Scrapbook Paper – I love to create my own dashboards, backdrops, as well as my own journaling cards. Scrapbook paper is fun to allow you to customize what you want and make use of your planner in your own way.
Journaling Cards, Stationary, Quote Cards, or Project Life Cards – These are not a necessity, but if you are looking to add some inspiration or a little pretty to your planning, see if you can find these cheap and try it out. The options are endless, so use this opportunity to unwind your creative side.
Laminating machine – You can find laminating sheets like those from Scotch or 1M pretty much anywhere online and in store. I find both useful and I use them often to make the inspiration cards I like to stick in my planner more durable. A laminating machine can also come in handy if you’d like to design your own interchangeable planner covers! How fun is that?! Search around and see what works best for you and your budget.
Stamps and Stamp Ink Pads – You can find a variety of traditional wooden block stamps or clear stamps from a variety of stores as well as the ink pads. I love using stamps as an alternative to using stickers in my planner. Sometimes I just like to switch it up, ya know! Again, this is optional but the options are endless.
